About 8% of all UK greenhouse gas emissions are from agriculture. Farmers are constantly told they must reduce their carbon footprint, but how easy is this for the different sectors and what does it involve? The simplistic way this calculation has been done does not take into account different farming systems and the government recently announced a £12.6 million fund to examine how agriculture contributes to climate change.
However, looking more closely at different types of farming there does seem to be evidence that changes made to businesses to make them more productive, efficient and therefore, more profitable in many cases result in a reduced carbon footprint. A win win situation for the farmer and the environment.
